He worked at the University of Cambridge (England) on nosocomial noroviral infections and at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) on veterinary viruses. He is currently based at the University of Heidelberg, Faculty of Medicine in Mannheim (Germany) assessing the role of viral infections in the development of cancer and metastasis. He is combining wet lab with bioinformatics analysis to develop models that could predict oncogenesis.

In 2015, he became Associate Professor and continues to hold this position today. Discoveries from the Zachos lab have identified mechasnisms that regulate the fidelity of chromosome segregation in mitotic cell division in higher eukaryotic cells.
